IGRAO-AFRICA is pleased to announce the launch of our Adult Literacy Program in Swahili and English. Registration is now officially open for adults and youth living in Kyebitaka village and across the wider Kyangwali Refugee Settlement.
For displaced individuals and adult community members who had their schooling disrupted by conflict or poverty, basic literacy and numeracy represent crucial pathways toward autonomy, economic dignity, and self-confidence.
Why Adult Literacy Matters in Kyangwali
Everyday life in a refugee settlement requires navigating a wide range of practical challenges: reading community notices, signing registration forms, participating in village savings groups (VSLAs), communicating with healthcare providers, and conducting market trade.
Language barriers can compound these challenges. In Western Uganda, while Swahili serves as a vital regional lingua franca for trade and social interaction among refugees from eastern and central Africa, English is Uganda’s official administrative and educational language. By providing structured lessons in both languages, our adult classes equip participants to communicate effectively with settlement authorities, local businesses, and host community neighbors.
Curriculum Focus and Practical Learning
The literacy curriculum is designed with adult learners in mind, emphasizing functional skills that can be applied immediately to daily life:
- Reading and Comprehension: Recognizing words, reading instructions, medication labels, and community notices.
- Practical Writing: Writing letters, filling out official forms, and writing names and identification details clearly.
- Everyday Spoken Language: Building conversational fluency in basic English and Swahili to improve social interaction and commercial exchange.
- Basic Numeracy & Bookkeeping: Managing small household budgets, tracking farming expenses, and balancing village savings records.
Who Can Enroll?
The program is free and open to all adult community members. We warmly welcome women, men, out-of-school youth, and persons with disabilities. Classes are planned with flexible daytime schedules to accommodate domestic duties, child care, and agricultural field work.
Registration Information
Community members interested in joining the adult literacy classes can register in person at the following venue:
- Registration Location: IGRAO-AFRICA Community Headquarters, Kyebitaka Village, Block 04, Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, Hoima District, Uganda.
- Registration Hours: Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
- Cost: Free of charge for all enrolled community participants.
