Matooke (cooking banana) is a foundational dietary staple across Western Uganda. In Kyebitaka, IGRAO manages 8 structured banana plantation blocks that serve as both a primary food source for displaced families and a practical training ground for soil mulching and moisture conservation.
Agronomy & Soil Health
Participating farmers receive instruction in suckering management, trenching for rainwater harvesting, and organic compost application. The harvested Matooke bunches directly supply household kitchens and school feeding programs, with surplus yields sold in local markets to fund group VSLA savings.
