On August 30, 2026, the IGRAO-AFRICA field team reached a major infrastructure milestone at our community headquarters and Early Childhood Development (ECD) Nursery Block in Kyebitaka village, Block 04, Kyangwali Refugee Settlement: the successful installation of all exterior doors and windows.
This milestone marks a significant transition from raw brick masonry toward a secure, weather-protected facility. For our teachers, children, and community coordinators, having permanent doors and windows in place transforms the structure into a functional learning and administrative hub.
Protecting Classrooms and Securing Administrative Spaces
Kyangwali Refugee Settlement experiences strong seasonal winds and heavy tropical downpours. Unprotected classroom openings previously left interior spaces vulnerable to rain and dampness. With durable metal window casements and secure glass fittings now in place, classrooms enjoy ample natural light and cross-ventilation while remaining fully protected against the elements.
The installation of secure metallic doors also provides critical safety for our administrative office. For the first time, educational records, textbooks, exercise materials, and field documentation can be stored securely on-site, allowing our coordination team to operate directly within the village.
Community Ownership and Local Craftsmanship
True to IGRAO’s refugee-led model, this achievement was made possible through direct community participation. Local refugee builders, carpenters, and village youth worked together to position, align, and anchor each frame into the masonry.
By engaging local craftsmen, this project not only improves our educational infrastructure but also keeps resources circulating within the settlement economy. When parents and youth build their own community school, it fosters a lasting sense of pride, ownership, and shared responsibility for the future of our children.
Next Steps Toward Opening Day
With the exterior envelope now fully enclosed, our attention turns to the next phase of preparations:
- Plastering and smoothing interior classroom walls and floors.
- Fabricating durable wooden desks and seating for young learners.
- Mounting large chalkboards and learning display areas in each classroom.
- Completing sanitation facilities and child-friendly handwashing points.
